Top 10 50cc scooters of 2018

50cc step-through scooters grab a hefty market share in the UK, despite their diminutive size. Here's our pick of the crop from 2018

With the roads becoming more congested, fuel prices on the increase and insurance premiums snowballing, more and more people are looking at scooters as a cheap, clean and reliable form of urban transport.

Be it the 16-year-old riding on a CBT and provisional, or the city worker using their full car licence, in the modern world, scooters seem to make a lot of sense.

With that in mind, here’s our pick of the best 50cc scoots on the market today.

10. WK TTR50

The WK TTR50 is designed to tug at the heartstrings of the younger generation of step-through moped riders. With its funky angular looks, striking paint and pocket money price tag, it’s as shouty and loud as a teens it’s trying to attract. Combined braking should mean any over enthusiastic new-comers keep the tyres on the Tarmac and a two year parts and labour warranty should keep you rolling if there are reliability issues.

As with the rest of the bikes in this list, the sub 3hp output should be enough to get you away from the lights ahead of the traffic – just. But for added teenage kudos you could go for the paint job inspired by road-racing ace, Gary Johnson. Coming to an Isle of Man TT paddock near you next summer.

9. AJS Firfefox 50

Another sporty machine and this one, at a glance anyway, looks to be inspired by the Benelli Tre Tornado! With wavy-discs, USD forks and a staggering 166mpg (claimed) make it the most frugal bike on the list by a long shot.

The one question mark remains over build quality and reliability, with most AJS dealers being franchised; is there a worry regarding parts supply? Only time will tell I guess.
