Production of Buell Super Cruiser finally underway

Good things come to those who wait. After two years of teasing, the Buell Super Cruiser is finally in production.

It’s actually happening. Buell Motorcycle Co. has actually begun production of its long-anticipated Super Cruiser, the brand’s first properly new model in more than a decade.

VIN 0001 was completed late last week, according to the USA-based brand. This comes after a very long period of hype, with the model having first been unveiled all the way back in February 2023.

“With production underway, Buell is doubling down on its commitment to hand-crafted precision, delivering motorcycles built without compromise,” says a media release from the company.

That first Buell won’t be available to buy, however. It’s going straight to the Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama. Fair enough, the story of Buell feels pretty noteworthy.

With its roots in the perennially unsuccessful efforts of engineer and motorcycling underdog Erik Buell (who founded the Buell Motor Company, which begat Buell American Motorcycles, which begat Erik Buell Racing), you would not have predicted success for Buell Motorcycle Co.

These days, Erik Buell is no longer directly associated with the company that bears his name. When current CEO Bill Melvin first took control, it was as a liquid asset manager. Most expected all the Buell bits and ideas to be sold to the highest bidder. Melvin had other plans.

“These hand-built machines are a true blend of performance and art,” says Melvin. “We’re proud of the talented team whose dedication and craftsmanship transformed the Super Cruiser from a bold concept into a production motorcycle.”

Buell says customer deliveries will begin once the vehicles have received their final certifications from the US government. Deliveries are expected to begin in the next two to four months.

That’s in the United States. How long it will be before we see the Super Cruiser in the UK, however, remains to be seen. Buell says it is taking a “measured approach,” not wanting to overextend itself and make the same mistakes as previous iterations of the Buell brand.

“We’ve chosen a deliberate path of ramping up production slow and steady to ensure every machine lives up to its promise,” says Jason Anderson, Manufacturing and Quality Director at Buell Motorcycle Co.

Buell does have a small but growing presence in the UK, however, so we’ll be eagerly anticipating the arrival of this insane, 175hp beast.
