A Patent from Can-Am suggests a new smart helmet could be on the way although it’s yet to make its way into production.

Can-Am has certainly been in the limelight over the last month or so after unveiling its brand new Origin and Pulse models which were made available for preorders in the UK, Europe and over in the United States, among other markets.

But now Can-Am appears to be in the process of developing a new smart helmet and here are some of the features. A full built-in communication system is planned for the new smart helmet, although it’s not yet known whether it will be compatible with other comms brands such as Sena or Cardo.

The helmet also comes with a heated visor which sounds very cool on the surface, but from experience Pinlock anti-fog lens systems are more than good enough. Another impressive feature is that the helmet has a built-in taillight for greater visibility in low-light conditions. A flashlight is also mounted on the side of the helmet and comes with its own battery.

Most patents are fairly complex to wrap your head around and this one is no different from Can-Am, but what I can tell you is that this helmet will have a battery pack that powers its communications system, speakers, a microphone and a taillight at the rear of the helmet.

One problem that Can-Am could encounter due to its built-in comms system is that riders who use a comms device when riding will typically have a preferred brand such as Sena, for example. But using a built-in comms takes away that option and does not guarantee it will work as well, nor be as easy to navigate.

Can-Am’s parent company BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) is developing a range of products to suit its electric motorcycles and this new smart helmet could be the perfect option for riders wanting one of its new Origin or Pulse motorcycles.
