A former Royal Marine killed in a support race to the British Superbike championship at Thruxton was run over accidentally by his team-mate, an inquest has heard with the coroner giving a verdict of accidental death.
37-year-old Mark Fincham, a leg amputee racing for True Heroes that give military veterans motorsport opportunities, was hit by his team-mate Jim Walker in an accident during the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 race at Thruxton.
At a Coroner’s Court, coroner Grahame Short gave a verdict of accidental death. In a statement given to the court, Walker described how his team-mate Fincham was thrown off his BMW S1000RR after his rear wheel went into a slide which forced him into a highside crash.
Paramedics gave Fincham CPR at the track but was pronounced dead at the circuit's medical centre 40 minutes later.
Coroner Short said Fincham died from “unsurvivable” internal injuries and ruled that the death was as a "combined result" of the crash and the collision with Walker.
Fincham’s family led the tributes to the 37-year-old: “Our world has fallen apart, we as a family are completely and utterly heartbroken. We have lost a totally amazing son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and boyfriend, who lived his life to fullest no matter what it threw at him.”
