Man saved by smartwatch after falling from cliff on motorcycle
After falling from a cliff in Utah while riding his motorcycle, a man was rescued thanks to the distress communication sent out by his smartwatch.
A man in the US has been rescued, after riding his motorcycle off the side of a cliff, thanks to the rescue alert system on his smartwatch.
The incident occurred in Washington County, Utah, last weekend, and saw the rider, so far unnamed, fall between 40 and 50 feet, The Hill reports.
First responders were able to find the man thanks to the rescue alert system on his smartwatch which is designed to detect major crashes and sends out a distress signal when the wearer is unable to respond to it themselves.
In this case, police officers were able to find the man and stabilise him before he was transported to hospital for treatment on his injuries, which are reportedly “serious.”
The brand and model of the man’s smartwatch are both unknown, but many of the latest versions of such watches are able to detect serious crashes and alert authorities if it determines the wearer is in distress and unable to respond to the watch themselves.
The most well-known is probably the Apple Watch, which features the ‘Crash Detection’ feature, as does the most recent iPhone.
Apple says the feature is “designed to detect severe car crashes - such as front-impact, side-impact, and rear-end collisions, and rollovers - involving sedans, minivans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and other passenger cars.”
Evidently, the watch the man involved in this case was wearing is also capable of detecting severe two-wheeler crashes. The man was reportedly found in a critical condition, but is expected to recover from his injuries.
