UK motorists have been offered a small, temporary relief from the current cost of living crisis by the supermarket, Morrisons, in the form of a discount on petrol.

Morrisons will offer its customers a 5p-per-litre discount on fuel, including both petrol and diesel, when they spend over £35 in-store.

The discount will be provided in the form of a voucher which can then be exchanged in a Morrisons petrol station, although this does not include franchised Morrisons Daily stations.

Morrisons will be offering the vouchers until 15 January, and the vouchers must be used by 22 January.

There are also a number of items which are excluded from the £35 in-store spend. The exclusions include: Fuel, Tobacco, Lottery products, Morrisons Café,  Gift Vouchers & Cards, Infant/Formula Milk, Cash Back, Dry Cleaning, Fireworks, Online Games and Instant Tickets, Photo Printing, Saver Stamps, Postage Stamps, ‘Top-Up’ Mobile Phone Cards, Delivery Charges/Pass, Garden Centre & Pharmacy (where applicable).

Rachel Eyre, Chief Customer & Marketing Officer at Morrisons, said: "January is always a financial squeeze after the expense of Christmas and this year we know the cost of living continues to impact customers’ pockets too. Our fuel offer aims to help budgets go a little further by providing a saving on one of the biggest expenses people across the UK are facing.”

The Morrisons discount comes in the first days after what the Competition and Market Authority (CMA) described as the most volatile year for fuel prices on record in 2022.

The volatility was, in part, caused by fuel retailers utilising ‘rocket and feather’ pricing methods, where prices would rise very quickly as wholesale prices rose, but only fall quite slowly as the wholesale prices dropped.

Additionally, the Morrisons discount comes before the anticipated increase in fuel duty expected for the spring.
