TWO motorcyclists have been involved in a crash at the famous Nürburgring earlier this week, with multiple vehicles involved and sadly one fatality.

The crash occurred on Monday this week during one of the Nürburgring’s Touristenfahrten public sessions. It’s reported in local media that a Mazda MX-5 collided with a tow truck, igniting its fuel tank and bursting into flames.

With fuel and possibly oil covering the course, a multi-vehicle pile-up ensued, reportedly including ten vehicles, including the truck, the MX-5, a C7 Corvette and more.

The incident came about as the tow truck was working to free a stranded car. It was apparently unsighted to the driver of the MX-5, which quickly caught fire.

Road & Track also reports that five people were seriously injured in the crash, while another two were left with minor injuries. The status of the two motorcyclists that were reported to be there at the time is not known.

Shortly after the crash, the session was ended, and the circuit closed. All the vehicles stranded on the course at the time were advised to follow a BMW M5 ‘Ring Taxi’ back the opposite way around the circuit to the nearest track exit.

The Nürburgring, also known as the Nordschleife, has been used by the general public since it opened in the 1920s. Anyone with a road-legal car can turn up, pay their money and complete a lap of the legendary circuit. The fact that some of the vehicles involved in this crash were reported to be driven by Nordschleife regulars, highlights the need for considerable amounts of practice and training before taking on the famous old track.
