The iC-R Promises to be the Most Advanced Motorcycle Helmet Ever

Helmets are becoming ever more advanced and ‘connected’, but the CES event might have just given us the most advanced yet

A new product has arrived on the market, promising to be the most technologically advanced and best motorcycle helmets ever made, with a host of electronic features built into the lid.

It’s called the iC-R, with the ‘iC’ standing for its maker, Intelligent Cranium Helmets, and the ‘R’ marking it as the highest spec product in the fledgling brand's range. Designed to help reduce our reliance on mobile phones, bolt-on Bluetooth systems, and action cameras, the iC-R arrives in ready-to-run form right out of the box - and the list of features is vast.

For starters, the iC-R features ride recording, with a frontally-mounted 1080p, 60fps action camera which is built in, while dual rear cameras provide the rider with a 240-degree view of their surroundings. Relaying the view to the rider is a built-in Heads-Up Display (HUD) featuring adjustable brightness, navigation, and Android Auto and Apple Carplay integration. The HUD can also be configured to show your speed and other important information, meaning the rider should be able to keep their eyes on the road.

One feature that is becoming more popular with bikers is the ability for a bike, or an ancillary device, to detect when a crash has occurred, and if needed make an emergency call for help. That’s also a feature of the iC-R, while its sensors can also provide real-time obstacle awareness with audible warnings. As you’d expect, the new helmet also provides the rider with Bluetooth connectivity, meaning calls, music and directions can be configured.

Normally with helmets such as this, and by that I mean ones built by tech companies and not traditional helmet manufacturers, it is the safety of the product that can put off some people. While we can’t comment on this particular helmet in that respect - having not tested it yet - it does seem like the company is going about things the correct way, as DOT certification has already been gained, while ECE and Snell testing is in progress and due to end soon.

So, the big question is, how much for this world's most advanced motorcycle helmet? Well, it’s not cheap. In fact, if you opt for the iC-Rs (Sport Edition) in red, you’ll be shelling out a hefty £1,381. A chunky amount that may be, although you’d probably spend a lot more buying a standard helmet and then adding lots of standalone devices to duplicate this specification.

More information on the iC-R can be found on the official website.
