Kawasaki’s 636cc ZX-6R is set for World Supersport action in 2025 after the Japanese brand has decided to homologate it for the championship.

The first ZX-6R to grace the world championship was many moons ago in 2002, and Kawasaki has enjoyed a huge amount of intermediate-class success, particularly thanks to Kenan Sofuoglu, who won three of his five Supersport titles in the famous green and black Kawasaki colours.

Kawasaki switched the majority of its international markets to the 636cc version in 2020, so homologating the bike is a no-brainer. Currently, Kawasaki uses the 599cc ZX-6R which continues to be marketed in Japan, but with World Supersport regulations allowing, and even pushing brands to enter with a higher capacity bike than a 600cc, the 636 ZX-6R fits that bill.

In domestic championships, the 636 has been homologated since 2020 as the 599 was withdrawn from many international markets. Puccetti Racing will remain the official Kawasaki team in World Supersport next season, and it will lead the charge with the ZX-6R 636.

Steve Guttridge, Race Planning Manager for Kawasaki Motors Europe, said: “We regard this as a logical process not only to provide a competitive machine on track for our official team, Puccetti Kawasaki Racing, for their 2025 WorldSSP assault but also to align the paddock presence in WorldSSP with the machines on display in dealer showrooms for a new sales season.”

“As soon as the homologation is confirmed we can concentrate on the final development and approval of any updated items within an accompanying racing kit parts programme, as well as informing and updating other Kawasaki teams who also race in championships aligned with the FIM homologation.”
