MotoGP finale Wins ‘Best GP’ of 2024 in Honour of Valencia
The 2024 MotoGP finale in Barcelona has been crowned the ‘best GP’ of 2024, and not just because it decided the title fight
The Solidarity Grand Prix of Barcelona played home to Jorge Martin winning his first MotoGP world championship, getting the better of Francesco Bagnaia in the process, but it also honoured Valencia after the mass floods which resulted in over 200 people losing their lives.
The link road to the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia was also damaged, along with other infrastructures and buildings in the region, so MotoGP decided to run its finale in Barcelona, where Bagnaia won both the sprint and Grand Prix.
However, the war was won by Martin as the Spaniard finished on the podium in both races which was more than enough to secure the title.
As a result of the great racing, but also the role it played in bringing millions of people together in support of Valencia, the finale has been named the best Grand Prix of 2024.
Dorna Sports CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, said: “The Solidarity GP was one of the biggest feats in the modern history of our sport. We want to thank everyone who made it possible and congratulate the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on receiving this award.
“It’s testament to everything we worked on together behind the scenes to create an incredible spectacle, a fantastic atmosphere and an extraordinary positive impact. That is the DNA of MotoGP.
"Finally, we want to thank the fans for making it a sold-out event. We couldn’t have dreamed of that when we first announced this Grand Prix, but when ticket sales opened we realised it was going to be even more special than we thought. Thank you for your passion for this sport, and for being a huge part of everything we’ve achieved together racing for Valencia."
Despite the very short time frame between announcing Barcelona as the replacement and the event taking place, the Solidarity GP also helped produce a record year for MotoGP as the sold-out capacity over the weekend took season attendance over three million for the first time in the sport’s history.
