New Speed Triple revealed

More power and tech for Triumph’s super-naked

New Speed Triple revealed

TRIUMPH has just revealed its updated Speed Triple, with a host of upgrades and more power.

Two versions of the 1050cc super-naked triple, the S and RS editions, both get engine updates boosting power from 140 to 150hp.

Both get a TFT colour dash, cruise control and illuminated switchgear, while the high-spec RS edition (main image) also gains a keyless ignition and lean-angle sensitive traction control and cornering ABS.

Triumph says 105 parts have been changed to make the engine higher-revving, with peak power occurring 7% higher in the range, at 10,500rpm. Peak torque is 86.2lbft at 7,150rpm.

The RS’s cornering-optimised traction control and ABS are delivered courtesy of a new inertial measurement unit which monitors chassis orientation.

The RS also gets Arrow sports silencers and carbon-fibre bodywork.

Triumph says the new rider aids make the updated model more agile, while the RS edition is also 3kg lighter than before, at 189kg without fluids.

The twin-spar aluminium frame, single-sided swing-arm and radial Brembo brake set-ups are unchanged on both editions, as are the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tyres.

Both have fully-adjustable suspension but the RS benefits from highs-spec Öhlins components while the S’s are from Showa.

Both versions come in black or white colour schemes with alternative detailing.

Triumph’s Chief Engineer Stuart Wood, said: “We have made major changes to the new Speed Triple engine. The result is a motor that spins up faster and revs harder for longer with a red line now 1,000 rpm higher than the previous generation. This delivers more Triumph Triple character, crisp throttle response and the unmistakeable Triple deep, rich roar to match.”

Standard Equipment

Full Colour Adjustable TFT Instruments

The Speed Triple S and RS feature all-new, angle-adjustable full colour 5" TFT instruments for riders to access the new on-board computer. There are three different screen display styles to choose from, pre-set to the riding modes and easily changeable on the move. To ensure that the screen is readable in all weather and riding conditions, each of the three styles can be selected with ‘High’ or ’Auto’ contrast. The Speed Triple RS comes with an additional set of three more screen display styles and a lap timer.

New On-Board Computer

Presents speedometer, rev counter, riding mode symbol, gear position display, fuel level, clock and ambient temperature on permanent display. Additional information is available via the selectable ‘tray’ at the bottom of the screen, including two trip displays, average and instantaneous fuel consumption, range to empty, riding mode selection, display style, contrast settings, service information, coolant temperature, and warning symbol information, plus lap timer (Speed Triple RS only).

New Switchcubes with Illuminated Buttons

To navigate the new instruments there are all-new switchcubes with an intuitive 5-way joystick control to improve ease of use. Innovative new back-lit buttons enhance rider interaction and improve control in all riding conditions.

Ride-by-Wire

For a crisper and more precise throttle response,

with improved on/off throttle transition. Enabling different throttle maps, which, combined with the ABS and traction control settings, give up to five riding modes.

Riding Modes

Linked to the ride-by-wire system – Road, Rain, Sport and Rider configurable riding modes are selectable on both new models via the new switch gear, for maximum control and safety in different riding conditions. The Speed Triple RS also has an extra Track mode, offering advanced ABS and traction control settings.

Optimised Cornering ABS and Traction Control

(Speed Triple RS)

Optimised cornering ABS and traction control ensure the optimum distribution of brake force, slip rate and torque control, improving both straight line riding and cornering.

Inertial Measurement Unit

(Speed Triple RS)

The new inertial measurement unit (IMU), developed with Continental, takes constant measurements of roll, pitch, yaw, lean angle and acceleration rates, and responds with appropriate active safety features.

Switchable ABS and Traction Control

(Speed Triple S)

Maximising rider safety and control, the riding modes feature the appropriate ABS and traction control settings, which can be turned off completely via the Rider configurable mode.

Keyless Ignition and Steering Lock

(Speed Triple RS)

The new keyless ignition system recognises the proximity of the key fob, enabling a push button start. The steering lock is also keyless and electronically activated by the lock button on the switchcube, with an option to disable the keyless function for even greater security.

Cruise Control

An easy-to-use cruise control function is now fitted as standard to both new models for the first time ever on a Speed Triple, improving long distance rideability by reducing rider fatigue.

DRL Headlight*

Daytime Running Lights (DRL)* incorporated into the headlight bring excellent visibility and a distinctive light profile.
