Revamped Triumph Speed Triple for 2011
Triumph updates its urban sportster's chassis and engine for 2011
Triumph are set to reveal an updated version of their long running Speed Triple model later this year, as part of it’s 2011 range.
New documents have been filed with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to certify the models new bike emissions and weights, the document reveals a significant change to the models emissions.
The 2011 Speed Triple has the same engine capacity as its predecessor at 1050cc, however the model has more fuel going into the engine, meaning it’s been fine tuned for more performance.
The new figures show, that the bike’s combined hydrocarbons and Nitrogen Oxide levels have doubled from 0.3g/km to 0.6g/km, while the carbon monoxide is up from 4g/km to 4.5g/km.
These significant emission changes mean the new model has been given a new ‘family’ designation on the documents, which differs from the current Sprint ST and Tiger. In the past, all three machines have been certified with having the same engine.
The 2011 Speed Triple is significantly lighter than its predecessor, with a decrease in the overall weight. CARB’s documents have different means of measuring the weight of the new model. It has been measured, using “Equivalent Inertial Mass” compared to the standard “normal/dry” or “wet kerb weight”.
The weight for the current model is 330kg, with a drop to 30kg on the new model. The equivalent wet weight is 217kgs and on the new model it’s down to 197kg.
With a significant decrease on the overall body weight, it appears the change lies in the engine and chassis. Preview pictures have shown the machine’s appearance is similar to the shape of the current bike, but with smaller and lighter exhausts and a revised frame.
What won’t be changing, are the styling cues of the current 1050 Speed Triple’s; two round headlights, a short, cut-off tail and a single-sided swingarm.
The new Speed Triple is likely to be released in the later part of 2011 as the CARB documents show Triumph has homologated its current Speed Triple – with identical emission and weight figures to the 2010 model, as a 2011 bike. This shows they are likely to continue manufacturing and selling the current model for at least part of 2011.
Triumph is rumoured to be revealing the revamped 2011 Speed Triple at the Milan show in November this year.
