Pedro Acosta was ruled out of the Grand Prix after suffering a brutal highside in last Saturday’s sprint race.

Acosta, who remains KTM’s best chance of securing an unlikely victory before the end of 2024 given his impressive form, suffered stretched ligaments as a result of his fall.

The shoulder injuries suffered by Acosta mean he will need to undergo further checks in Buriram after initial checks confirmed no fractures.

The polesitter at the previous round in Japan, Acosta was on course to win the sprint before crashing from the lead, a mistake he repeated while running second in the Grand Prix.

A statement on his condition from Tech3 said: “After being declared unfit for the Australian GP this morning, Pedro went to Melbourne’s hospital for further examination on his left shoulder. It was re-confirmed that there is no fracture, which is a positive point.

“The impact of his shoulder on the ground during his sprint crash was very intense, which has caused Pedro pain due to stretched ligaments. He will benefit from the few days before the Thai GP to rest his body, and will be re-evaluated in Buriram.”

Due to his recent mishaps in Japan and his absence from Sunday’s Grand Prix down under, Acosta has now dropped to sixth in the championship behind 2025 KTM team-mate Brad Binder.

Despite improving its package compared to 2023, KTM is still winless in both the sprint and Grand Prix format in 2024, as only Ducati and Aprilia have taken wins in either race.

If Acosta is passed fit for this weekend he will have six more opportunities to claim a rookie win as Sepang and Valencia will follow the Thai MotoGP.
