Jacob Davies-Pyke was paralysed from the chest down when he suffered a road traffic accident in December 2022 while riding his motorcycle. Through specialised training from the Phoenix Motorcycle back-to-riding course, though, he has now achieved his goal of riding again.

Before being discharged from the hospital, Davies-Pyke had already begun to formulate ideas on how he could do the things he loved, which included riding bikes. However, as someone who rode his bike for much more than just commuting, regaining full biking freedom appeared unlikely.

Reflecting on what motorcycling meant to him, Davies-Pyke said: “Before the accident, I used my motorcycle not just for commuting, but it was a big part of my social life as well. I had made many new friends through motorcycling, and even joined various motorcycle groups who I went on rideouts with. My motorcycle gave me a new dimension to my life. It was so much more than just a machine; it made me very happy and gave me confidence to go out and meet new people and make new friends. I had learnt that the motorcycle community is fun and friendly, and this was something I simply did not want to give up.”

Restricted to trikes after his accident, Davies-Pyke only held a bike licence and not a car driving licence. His disability made it tough to find a school that would offer the training necessary, but that’s when he found the Phoenix Motorcycle Training School, who put together a plan for him to regain his biker licence.

Detailing the journey, Davies-Pyke said: “I did my CBT with Phoenix Motorcycle Training in Sidcup as the training pad there was big enough to accommodate the size of my trike. As I wasn’t allowed on the roads before the CBT, a friend from my biker group rode my trike up there so I could attend my CBT. The Phoenix trainer, Nik, who helped me with my CBT, was fantastic and really friendly. After the day was over I had completed my CBT, which was a great achievement for me as a disabled wheelchair user.”

With his CBT complete, riding on the roads still proved to be challenging as the power of a trike exceeds what a rider with L plates can ride with. Instead, he did a CBT Plus course with Mark Jaffe from Phoenix. This allowed Davies-Pyke to do a course that gave him more experience on the trike while prepping him for the full licence training and test. He went on to pass his test at the first attempt.

Everyone at Visordown is pleased to hear of his exceptional recovery.
