Amid slowing sales in the EV sector, the European People's Party (EPP) is pushing to overturn the current 2035 internal combustion ban.

The news organisation Reuters has reported that it received a draft of the document, which is said to be getting published in full at some point today. The move from the EPP is going to pile further pressure on Brussels, which is already feeling the heat from automotive manufacturers across Europe, many of which are struggling to shift the electric cars they have invested so much time and money into.

Specifically, Reuters reports that the EPP is pushing to allow the sale of hybrid vehicles which feature an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. It’s also wanting to change the law so vehicles which run on bio and synthetic fuels can continue to be sold.

That final point, in the eyes of most level-headed people, would be a very sensible move, as it should give some confidence to the automakers that all their eggs aren’t being forced into the ‘electric’ basket. It should also help to boost investment in the alternative fuels sector, which would speed up the development and funding in that area, speeding the move to a more sensible alternative to petrol and diesel in the process.

And you may be wondering what this has to do with you, as we are talking about the 2030 internal combustion car and van ban. While it’s true that it hasn’t been unequivocally confirmed when the ban would affect the two-wheeled sector, a 2040 ban on the sale of ICE motorcycles is the most widely expected outcome. Should the EPP have its way, the knock-on effect on the two-wheeled sector could be very similar to that of the four-wheeled, and hopefully lead to a more logical solution simply forcing us to ride electric bikes.
