Dovizioso wins Sic Supermoto
Ducati's new man overcomes stiff competition
ANDREA Dovizioso won Sunday's charity Supermoto event, beating seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi, who finished third.
Recently retired double World Superbike champion Max Biaggi also competed in the inaugural race - organized by the Marco Simoncelli Foundation - coming eighth.
The race was held at the Latina circuit in Italy, and teamed road race and Supermoto specialists for a 58-lap race (in tribute to Simoncelli's race number). Despite recently suffering a neck injury which sidelined him from Ducati's latest three day test, Dovizioso and his team-mate Mauno Hermunen triumphed in style.
Speaking after the race, Dovizioso, who shared a friendly rivalry with Simoncelli, said: 'They were two fantastic days - Marco was very popular, and he will remain popular because of the important legacy he leaves behind. Unfortunately there is nothing more we can do for him, but at least we can help his foundation.'
Over 5,000 fans were in attendance, and over 90,000 Euros were raised for the Simoncelli Foundation. Marco Simoncelli's father Paolo was on hand to dish out the awards.
