Road Rage Driver Who Mowed Down Biker Jailed
Darren Kay was angry at a biker for filtering past him, and used his car as a weapon causing life-changing injuries to the rider
A driver who mowed down a biker in a fit of road rage has been jailed this week. Darren Kay, aged 53, was angry with the motorcyclist after the biker filtered to the front of traffic on the A259 at Ferring, West Sussex.
In retaliation to the biker’s riding, Kay undertook a row of stationary cars so he could catch up, and then swerved his vehicle towards them, knocking them off the bike. The unnamed biker, a 34-year-old from Lancing, is said to have ‘sustained life-changing injuries’ and was taken to hospital after the crash with a bleed on the brain.
Kay originally tried to claim that he hadn’t seen the bike prior to hitting them, although the dash cam fitted in his car told a very different story. A statement from Sussex Police reports that the camera shows Kay deliberately chasing down the motorcyclist, and even more chilling is the fact that he hurled verbal abuse at the rider as his car impacted them.
Investigating officer Sergeant Mark Farrow from the Roads Policing Unit said:
“Kay drove dangerously and deliberately to knock over the rider of the motorcycle.
“The collision has had a long-term impact on his victim who was not able to return to his employment for eight months.
“His driving was appalling and completely unacceptable. He is extremely fortunate not to have caused a fatality. So we are pleased he is now serving a significant custodial sentence, and that a dangerous driver has been taken off our roads.”
Kay, formerly of Onslow Drive, Ferring, was sentenced to three years and two months in prison. He was disqualified from driving for four years and seven months.
