Suzuki has not closed the door on potentially returning to MotoGP despite leaving all forms of two-wheel racing just two years ago, after citing financial pressures and changing market trends for its reasoning at the time.

Suzuki also packed its bags and left MotoGP at a time when it had won the premier class title with Joan Mir just two years prior (2020), while its last season in 2022 ended with Alex Rins winning two out of the final three Grand Prix.

The news of Suzuki’s departure from MotoGP was a bombshell announcement, especially as it had just signed a new five-year deal with Dorna to remain in the series for a further five seasons.

Suzuki’s president, Toshihiro Suzuki, has confirmed to Italian media that a return is not being ruled out although there are no imminent plans to do so. In an interview with Coriello dello Sport, Suzuki said: “The victories in MotoGP were, of course, very important for us. However, it doesn't matter much if we don't have a complete and diverse range of models for all motorcycle enthusiasts.

“And I don't think we are in that situation at the moment. It is important for us to quickly offer a complete product range that satisfies today's riders. If everything goes well, we will then return to racing - and win again.”

With a major rule change coming in 2027, which will include 100 per cent use of sustainable fuel, a drop in engine size from 1000cc to 850cc, a ban on ride-height devices and stricter aerodynamic regulations, Suzuki would have been well suited to make a return then, however, it looks as though a MotoGP comeback will have to wait beyond that.

Instead, BMW, who was originally linked with the vacated grid slots by Suzuki when the Japanese brand left at the end of 2022, has been vocal about potentially joining MotoGP and this could happen in 2027.

So in the next few years, we could be looking at a MotoGP world championship that features both BMW, who were crowned WorldSBK champions for the first time in 2024 thanks to Toprak Razgatlioglu winning the title in his first season with the brand, and Suzuki.
