Following the news of MotoGP champion Jorge Martin’s bad pre-season crash, Toprak Razgatlioglu is the next big-name star to fall, after he high-sided his BMW on just the third lap of the official World Superbike test.

The crash occurred at Phillip Island, at turn 6, which is also known as Siberia Corner, so called due to the cold winds that rattle off the Bass Strait and onto the circuit. Pictures from the circuit show an unusual crash, with Razgatlioglu seemingly unseated early at the exit of the turn. Indeed, the Turkish rider’s own interpretation of events highlights the peculiar nature of the incident.

“For me, it was a very strange crash.” Razgatlioglu said. “We checked the data. I’ve got 39% gas and I highsided because the traction wasn’t working there. I spoke with my electronics guy. He checked why it wasn’t working and he didn’t know.”

Video footage from the track shows the 2024 Superbike World Champion returning to the paddock, and although smiling and talking to onlookers about the crash, he’s clearly carrying himself quite gingerly.

“I’m lucky nothing is broken but I feel pain everywhere, especially in my hand. In the afternoon, I rode again because I needed to ride to understand the bike and work on setup. At the end of the day, we had good pace. We understood the bike and found some good setup. Tomorrow is another day and I hope we find a good setup because the pace is important here. Now it isn’t bad, but I need a little bit more. I saw the picture when I was flying! I immediately tried to cover my hand. The finger isn’t bad; I feel a little bit of pain.”

Razgatlioglu went on to complete five stints during FP2, posting his fastest laps in the 1m 29 and 1m 30-second region, with his fastest lap being a 1m 29.334s.
