The Indian automotive giant TVS has just revealed its latest engine, and it’s a unit that could rival the likes of KTM’s much-loved 390 single-cylinder.

Like the Bajaj-built KTM unit, the TVS motor, called the RT-XD4 300, utilises a DOHC design, which works alongside downdraft intakes and a ride-by-wire throttle. The 299cc engine puts the power to the back wheels via a six-speed gearbox, which features a slip-assist clutch.

The engine also features dual oil pumps and a split chamber crankcase. It also uses an innovative dual-zone cooling jacket. The cylinder head has a water jacket on top and an oil jacket below, which is said to increase engine cooling, which in turn boosts performance.

What the engine will now land in remains to be seen, although with its A2 licence-friendly output, and compact dimensions, it should make it possible to feed into a range of bikes.
