29-Year-Old Motorcyclist Dies After Crashing Yamaha R1

One week after a racer lost his life at the Manx GP, another motorcyclist has passed away after an accident in Italy.

29-year-old Nicola Cardinali was taking part in a track day at Magione on Monday aboard a Yamaha R1. The accident took place during the afternoon as Cardinali suddenly lost control and crashed into the barriers. The impact of the accident immediately appeared to be serious, and Cardinali was attended to by a circuit’s medical team.

Cardinali was quickly transferred to a hospital in Perguia, however, the Italian rider died during the transfer despite attempts to revive him from the medical team. Following the accident, the track’s cameras and Cardinali’s motorcycle were recovered and an investigation into what happened is underway.

The Magione racetrack and the municipality of Marciano expressed their closeness and condolences to the family, and confirmed a day of mourning on the day of the funeral. We at Visordown express our condolences to the family and friends of Nicola Cardinali.

The Autodromo dell’Umbria is a short 1.5 mile circuit which has staged several feeder-series races in the past, mainly four-wheel racing rather than two wheels. But it is also used as a testing track and track day venue for both drivers and riders.

The most famous driver to hold a record around the Italian circuit is Aston Martin F1 driver Lance Stroll, who set the Formula 4 lap record in 2014. The circuit was created in 1970 by a group of friends and it featured in the video game Assetto Corsa, best known to Italians. The circuit staged its first race in 1973, hosting motorcycle races and the Italian Formula 3 championship.
