Earlier this year Aleix Espargaro made the decision to end his MotoGP career after Aprilia allowed the Spaniard to decide his next move, and while one part of his ‘next move’ has already been confirmed, it seems a second profession will be taking up some of his time in 2025.

Espargaro, who has already signed for HRC as its official test rider and been in MotoGP action for the Japanese brand, has now joined the Lidl-Trek professional cycling team.

The long-time MotoGP racer and winner of three Grand Prix, Espargaro’s new role will be as an ambassador for the team, and he will attend some of the biggest race events of the year. Espargaro will begin his new role on 1 January.

Espargaro announced his full-time retirement after the Catalan MotoGP earlier this year, although that wasn’t his final race at his home venue as the 2024 season moved its season-finale to the Barcelona-based track after deadly floods affected the Valencia region.

“I’m thrilled to join the Lidl-Trek family, which is home to some of the world’s best cyclists,” said Espargaro. “I’m excited to learn from some of the best cyclists and staff in the sport, push my limits, and share this special journey with fans.”

Espargaro has held a keen interest in cycling for a long time and used the activity as one of his main ways to train during and after every season. But surprisingly, Espargaro also confirmed that he retired from full-time MotoGP racing “earlier than planned” to join the Lidl-Trek team.

“Cycling has been a passion of mine for years, and I decided to step away from MotoGP earlier than planned to join a program which aligns so well with my passion,” he said. “I’m deeply grateful to Lidl-Trek for welcoming me to their family and supporting me. I’ll give it everything I have.”

It’s unclear whether Espargaro will actually compete for the team in any way.
