Biker Caught by ‘Noise Camera’ Fined £1,500

A bike in Great Yarmouth has been caught and fined by a noise camera, for causing unnecessary noise and pulling wheelies on his motorcycle.

Jack Baker, 27, from Gorleston, was caught on camera pulling wheelies on his bike and revving the engine in June 2024. This behaviour, and because he’d been photographed by the noise camera, was enough to secure a conviction, landing him with a £1,500 fine.

Police originally sent a fixed penalty notice to Baker, although he claimed not to have received it due to no longer being at that address. Pursuing the case through the courts, Great Yarmouth Borough Council succeeded in landing three offences in Baker’s lap. One of the counts is that he “rapidly accelerated, performed a wheelie and revved the bike”. In court, Baker disputed this by rather comically saying that it was "not a proper wheelie" and that it was, in fact, accidental, adding that he was "quick on the throttle"... Yeah right.

The BBC reports that magistrates fined Baker £100 for the three offences and imposed a £40 victim surcharge. He was also ordered to pay £135 investigation costs and £1,305 legal costs.

The noise camera in Great Yarmouth is just one of hundreds that have been introduced up and down the country over the last twelve months. Estimated to cost more than £100,000 each, they are triggered when a passing vehicle exceeds the noise threshold, activating a camera on the unit which is then used to capture an image of the vehicle. The one in Great Yarmouth is reported to have already led to 26 road users being sent warning letters about their behaviour, all within the first three months of its operation.
