Bosch could be on its way to making an even bigger impact in the motorcycle industry thanks to its new, €6 million (roughly £5m) investment into 3D Metal Printing.

Bosch needs no introduction as the German company is well known for its engine management systems, ABS, fuel injection, or basic tools that can be used in the comfort of your home and garage.

The industrial company already supplies technical parts found on entry-level commuters all the way to the most advanced motorcycles on the planet in MotoGP. But now, the huge firm has invested a whopping €6 million to basically use high-powered lasers in order to produce powdered metal into high-strength equipment courtesy of it doubling down on 3D metal printing.

How could this impact the motorcycle industry, you ask? Well, 3D metal printing is not only efficient but faster and would likely prove to be a much quicker process when creating components, while it could also mean more agile chassis frames and lighter engine parts, among many other things.

Nuremberg commercial plant manager, Alexander Weischel, said, “By making the manufacture of metal parts faster and more productive, this new facility will increase our competitiveness. Using the 3D printer to manufacture components not only increases sustainability in production, but also enables Bosch to respond flexibly to fluctuations in batch sizes and offer everything from a single source.”

Bosch has already played a big role in transforming the industry with safety tech like its radar-based system, lean-angle-sensitive ABS and adaptive traction control.

One thing is for sure, Bosch doesn’t do things half-heartedly so if it intends to start using its 3D-printed technology on production parts for motorcycles, then it’s safe to say it will likely be successful in doing so.
