Former Grand Prix Racer Takes Up Surprising New Life
Axel Pons has been walking barefoot for six years to Pakistan in a bid to find ‘God’
Formerly a competitor in the Moto2 world championship, Axel Pons has taken up a new path which has led to him walking from Spain to Pakistan to find ‘God’.
Pons never made it to MotoGP during his racing career, but he was a mainstay in the intermediate class. When the appeal of racing began to fade, this unusual transition into walking, barefoot no less, for the last six years has been his escape from the challenges of day-to-day life.
Pons raced a total of ten seasons in Moto2, but the Spaniard has shown up in Pakistan as he admitted the decision to undertake this new adventure started when he began questioning why he was living a ‘fast life’.
“At some point, I started to question what is the point of living such a fast life,” said Pons. “I started going slower, slower, slower, until now where I’m walking around slowly, slowly, appreciating the details of life.”
“It’s nothing special, it came naturally. At some point, nothing else made more sense than to walk and to surrender all the weight that we were accumulating during our life, and just desire complete union with Allah, or with God. This is our way of practicing, by walking.”
During a video with the Wahaj Ali.B YouTube channel, Pons is sitting on a chair as he speaks to a child before engaging with the person filming him. When asked his name, he says “Isa” at first before clarifying that his birth name was Axel.
In the video that’s provided by Pakistan Tourism, Pons is seen walking barefoot before showing the underneath of his feat which are completely black from travelling across different terrain and on public roads.
