Zero recalls all 2012 model year motorcycles due to fire risk
An electrical short could set the bike alight
SOME Zero riders will soon find themselves with zero bikes to ride after the American electric motorcycle manufacturer announced a product recall on all 2012 models due to a fire risk.
The recall, which affects more than 200 machines, has been triggered after an issue with the cell pouches inside the bikes' battery packs was discovered. Wear can occur as the packs rub against their housing and humidity can get inside, which could cause an electrical short within the battery, potentially resulting in the motorcycle catching alight.
The manufacturer, which develops its own lithium-ion power packs in-house, is in the process of contacting owners and offering them the option to have their motorcycles fixed, or bought back as a trade-in against a newer model year Zero.
With the expensive recall set to commence from the end of April, Zero has warned owners to not charge or ride the motorcycles in the meantime.
Luckily, UK riders are unlikely to be affected by the recall as there are reportedly no 2012 Zero models in the country.
