A mass recall to the tune of over 12,000 Yamaha motorcycles is taking place in Germany, covering the MT-09, MT-10 and both SP versions, the Tracer 9 GT and GT+, as well as the Niken GT and XSR900 models due to a faulty ECU programming of the throttle position sensor (TPS).

The problem affects all eight models produced between May 2021 and December 2024. The improper ECU sensor programming could result in the bikes stalling while the engine is idling. Yamaha has stated that fault could also lead to wear in the TPS.

This wear could lead to a build up of debris in the contact points and in some cases cause a malfunction. As a result riders could be faced with the engine switching itself off at irregular times. The malfunction indicator may display the error code P2135

As part of the process to rectify the issue Yamaha has launched a plan that will see measures such as a software update of the control unit for all affected motorcycles, replacing the throttle position sensor (TPS) on machines that have already been driven and resetting the TPS to the specified value, being taken.

For all customers who have one of the affected models the repair will be done free of charge. The repair will reportedly take around two hours to complete.

Yamaha is performing the recall together with the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The KBA determines the owner addresses of the affected vehicles and the owners then receive an official notification to tell them of the planned recall.

The new MT-09 and SP models, along with the Tracer 9 GT and GT+ bikes are the motorcycles most affected by the faulty ECU sensor problem, while the least affected is the three-wheeler Niken GT.
