Earlier this week Jonathan Rea was ruled out of the inaugural Cremona World Superbike round, as the six-time champion continues to recover from a deep wound and fracture to his right thumb.

Rea, who suffered the injury during race one of the French round at Magny-Cours, underwent immediate surgery that evening but has not recovered in time despite his best efforts.

“I’m disappointed having to sit out this weekend in Cremona,” Rea admitted. “After speaking with Dr Antonie Martens, who performed the surgery in France, and Dr Michael McBride, who is following my case at home in Belfast, both insist the tendon graft and skin grafts on my right thumb need a little more time to heal and avoid any setbacks.

“I am doing everything at home to be back at 100% as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone who is standing with me during this tough time.”

Rea has been replaced by long-time Yamaha rider Nicolo Canepa, with the Italian set to retire from racing after this weekend’s stand-in appearance.

That’s not the only moving part for Yamaha at Cremona, with Dominique Aegerter still ruled out after a motocross accident a few weeks ago. The Swiss rider has been replaced by Marvin Fritz, while at Motoxracing Bradley Ray will have a team-mate for the first time in his Superbike career.

Alessandro Delbianco has been brought in for a wildcard appearance and admits he hopes to repay Yamaha’s support. The Italian said: “I am very happy to tackle this wildcard with Sandro Carusi and MotoXracing, especially because it is an event in Italy, which makes it even more special for me.

“I thank Yamaha for the trust they have shown me by deciding to let me race in Cremona, and for the support that has allowed me to get to this stage.”
