Jonathan Rea has given the public a detailed look at his ankle injury which will see him miss the Portimao World Superbike round, with former British Superbike rider Jason O’Halloran called up to replace the six-time champion.

Rea injured his left ankle in a crash during the pre-season World Superbike test at Phillip Island, and the Northern Irishman has been out of action since then as his recovery has proven to be long and challenging.

Following a difficult first season with Yamaha in 2024, the new season could not have started out any worse for the former Kawasaki rider, who has already lost valuable track time with his R1 machine.

In a series of photos posted on his social media, Rea showed off his current situation which involved wearing a cast over his left foot as well as the structural damage that took place.

Rea will want to make a swift return after Yamaha confirmed it is returning to the Suzuka 8 Hours in 2025 and will choose a line-up that consists of MotoGP and Superbike riders, but his return will not come at Portimao this weekend, and Assen on 11-13 April might also be too soon for a comeback.

In a recent statement Rea told WorldSBK.com: “I’m doing okay, it’s obviously a bit frustrating to be at home not able to do too much. It really is a process and I’m doing everything in my power to try to get back on track and back to full fitness as fast and safely as possible. After our positive winter tests, I am so motivated to get back on the bike so I will do everything possible to enhance the recovery process, but obviously you have to be careful

“I’ve been looking at everything, diet, supplements and of course using the hyperbaric chamber which I now have at home. As soon as the cast comes off, there are all sorts of things such as ultrasound equipment for bone healing which can give you some marginal gains in the recovery process. I want to treat the recovery process with as much effort and detail as I would one of my race weekends.”
