The 2019 British Superbike Championship title battle will go down to the wire after Josh Brookes resisted a charging Scott Redding to keep the pressure on his rival heading into the final race of the year at Brands Hatch.

A race that built in tension right up to a thrilling final lap battle between the two Be Wiser Ducati riders, Redding clawed himself back into contention from a poor start to mount a fierce final lap attack in his quest for the win that would have put him right on the cusp of the championship.

Indeed, a poor start and a wide run through Druids on lap one initially had Redding down in eighth place as Brookes held the lead from pole position and though progress was initially slow, the ex-MotoGP rider was up to third by lap seven of 20 to set off in pursuit of Brookes and Tommy Bridewell ahead.

Stalking the duo for several laps, Redding made his move on Bridewell stick on lap 18 before sizing up Brookes for a smart block pass into Paddock Hill Bend as they entered the final lap.

However, the Australian responded straight back with an untidy but determined retake of the lead into Druids – one that pushed them both wide – before resisting his team-mate to the chequered flag.

A crucial result for Brookes, had Redding completed the win then he’d need a mere 15th place finish in race three to be crowned champion even if the Australian won it.

Even so, the odds are still stacked in Redding’s favour as he takes a 14-point lead into the final race meaning he needs a fifth place to be assured of the title.

Bridewell followed home in third place to confirm a top three finish in the overall standings, while Tarran Mackenzie mounted a strong ride to finish fourth, ahead of Christian Iddon, Danny Buchan and Jason O’Halloran.

Peter Hickman, Andrew Irwin and Taylor Mackenzie completed the top ten.
