Race 3

BSB Race 3 in Thruxton saw a continuation of what we saw all weekend: Jason O'Halloran domination, as he completed the treble.

Max Cook made the holeshot, and he led from Kyle Ryde and Leon Haslam in the opening stages. It soon became clear, though, that Haslam did not have the pace, as Cook and Ryde stretched away.

It took until half-distance for a break to be made, and it was done so by Ryan Vickers and Cook; helped by battling between Kyle Ryde and Charlie Nesbitt.

Once Nesbitt had some time in front of Ryde, he was able to pull himself, Ryde, Lee Jackson and Danny Kent all back up to the front two. At the back of all of those, in seventh, was Jason O'Halloran.

At the beginning of lap 17, O'Halloran was fifth, but onto the final lap he was leading. Simply, O'Halloran had more edge grip on the crucial right side. Where the others span and went nowhere, he was still driving. Only Cheshire Mouldings Kawasaki's Lee Jackson had comparable grip to O'Halloran and the McAMS Yamaha, but even he could not prevent the Australian from completing the treble.

Jackson was able to repeat his second place from Race 2, though, and Charlie Nesbitt finished third to ensure the podium was identical in Race 3 to that of Race 2.

Max Cook repeated his personal best result of Race 1 yesterday by finishing fourth, ahead of Ryan Vickers (5th) and Leon Haslam (6th, top BMW) who completed the top six.

Kyle Ryde was seventh, ahead of Storm Stacey (8th), Peter Hickman (9th), and Christian Iddon (10th, top Ducati) who rounded out the top 10.

The miserable weekend for PBM Ducati continued, as their title contending riders, Tommy Bridewell and Glenn Irwin, finished 15th and 13th, respectively, split by Honda's rookie fill-in Franco Bourne.

Danny Kent and Jack Kennedy were both running in the top 10 as they entered the final lap, but, when Kent's rear suspension collapsed on the final lap, there was little he could do to avid crashing and, in turn, there was little Kennedy could do to avoid crashing on Kent's unguided Fireblade. Both riders were able to walk away from what was the definition of an unlucky incident.

Race 2

Kyle Ryde made the holeshot, jumping pole sitter Charlie Nesbitt at the start, but no one was able to make any kind of advantage throughout the race.

The front group covered almost the entire top 10, and several riders enjoyed some time at the front.

As the race entered the final five laps, the group had been reduced to six, the OMG Racing Yamahas had become relatively established at the front, and Max Cook became the first rider to drop out of the group at the chicane on lap 15.

Coming from behind, slowly and after a bad start, was Jason O'Halloran. He, Cook's Cheshire Mouldings Kawasaki teammate Lee Jackson, and the two aforementioned OMG R1s of Kyle Ryde and Ryan Vickers were in front of the Cook incident when it happened, and had some advantage after it.

But, O'Halloran was the only one to take full profit from the break, as the OMG bikes fell back towards Charlie Nesbitt and Jack Kennedy in what became the battle for the podium.

O'Halloran took the lead on lap 18 from Lee Jackson. Both of them were clear of the aforementioned third-place battle behind, but after he was passed Jackson could not match the pace of O'Halloran, who continued his domination of the weekend.

Jackson confirmed second place and his first podium of the season in second, ahead of Charlie Nesbitt who doubled his BSB podium tally one day after taking his first rostrum in Race 1.

Just missing out in fourth place was Ryan Vickers, ahead of Jack Kennedy (5th) and Kyle Ryde (6th), who received a long-lap-equivalent penalty for exceeding track limits. Leon Haslam, on the BMW, was the top non-Japanese bike in seventh, ahead of Peter Hickman on athe second BMW, while Christian Iddon (9th, top Ducati) and Danny Kent (10th) completed the top 10.

Race 1

BSB Race 1 at Thruxton saw Jason O’Halloran take his sixth win in his last seven starts at the Hampshire track, as he pulled away in the final stages from the comparatively chaotic fight for the podium positions.

If the World Championship is currently not the domain of the Japanese manufacturers, the British Championship certainly is - or at least it was in BSB Race 1 at Thruxton.

Jason O’Halloran made the holeshot from pole position, while Kyle Ryde jumped his OMG Racing teammate, Ryan Vickers, for second spot.

Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Honda riders all fought for the podium positions from the first lap, and the highest non-Japanese bike was the BMW of Leon Haslam in eighth in the early stages.

It was not until the final three laps that Haslam began to make progress, and that came not long after O’Halloran made his own break at the front.

The #22’s pace from lap 11 split the pack. He was gone at the front, while Vickers, Charlie Nesbitt, and the two Cheshire Mouldings Kawasakis of Lee Jackson and Max Cook fought for second, long clear of the fight which involved Haslam, that for sixth.

It was a battle that Haslam would win, but his margin was much narrower than O’Halloran’s. The Australian won by 1.591 seconds, and the man who was closest to him was similarly noteworthy, as Charlie Nesbitt took his first podium in British Superbikes with second place thanks to a neat bit of racecraft in the final chicane.

The podium was completed by Ryan Vickers, who took his third top three of the season.

Max Cook narrowly missed out on a debut podium, but still took a career best result in fourth place, ahead of his Cheshire Mouldings Kawasaki teammate Lee Jackson who completed the top five.

Rounding out the top six was the aforementioned Haslam, finishing as the top BMW and top non-Japanese bike, ahead of Danny Kent (7th), Kyle Ryde (8th), Glenn Irwin (9th, top Ducati), and Peter Hickman (10th).

Championship leader Tommy Bridewell finished down in 14th, continuing his difficult weekend. Similarly, Josh Brookes was only 15th at the chequered flag.

Qualifying

Qualifying for BSB at Thruxton took place in dry conditions, despite rain on Saturday morning. Jason O'Halloran has won five of the last six races at this circuit, and it was he that headed a Yamaha 1-2-3 to take pole position.

Q1 in Thruxton was a relatively straightforward session, although that was not to the benefit of Josh Brookes, who qualified only down in 21st.

On the contrary, Ryan Vickers topped the session, and advanced to Q2 along with Max Cook, Leon Haslam, Bradley Perie, Dean Harrison, and Storm Stacey.

Jason O'Halloran's 1:14.634 put him almost 0.3 seconds clear of Ryan Vickers in second place in Q2, and those two were the only riders under the 1:15 barrier. Kyle Ryde completed the Yamaha front row lockout with a 1:15.172.

Lee Jackson took fourth place in one of his best showings of the season for Cheshire Mouldings Kawasaki, while Charlie Nesbitt (5th, top Honda) and Max Cook (6th) both impressed to complete the second row.

Storm Stacey was similarly impressive in seventh place, ahead of Glenn Irwin (8th) and Jack Kennedy (9th) who completed row three. Leon Haslam rounded out the qualifying top 10 (and as top BMW), and will be joined on row four for Race 1 by Luke Mossey and Danny Kent.

FP2

BSB FP2 in Thruxton followed a similar path to that of FP1, with some surprising names at the top, but none able to displace Jason O'Halloran, who completed a sweep of Friday's practice sessions.

Closest to O'Halloran was Danny Kent, the fastest Honda once again, but even he was 0.192 second behind O'Halloran. Two-tenths is not a huge gap, generally speaking, but in only a 75-second lap time it equates to a significant distance.

Luke Mossey continued his strong form from the morning to end Friday third fastest in easily the best showing for him this season. He was ahead of Lee Jackson, who has rarely been as close to the front as fourth this season, while Charlie Nesbitt rounded out the top five.

Jack Kennedy was second with only a few minutes left in the session, but was bumped to sixth by the end, while the fastest Ducati came in seventh place in the hands of Christian Iddon. Two more Ducatis followed the #21 up, with Glenn Irwin eighth and points leader Tommy Bridewell ninth, while Kyle Ryde rounded out the top 10.

Peter Hickman and Danny Buchan, in 11th and 12th respectively, took the final two automatic spots in the final part of qualifying.

FP1

The weekend in Thruxton started out best for Jason O'Halloran, who topped the session by almost 0.1 seconds, but Yamaha riders did not enjoy quite the same domination as last year early on this weekend, with BMWs and Hondas also showing well.

Particularly, the BMW charge was fronted by, perhaps surprisingly, Luke Mossey. That is not intended as a knock on Mossey's ability - himself a BSB race winner - but Thruxton was the scene of one of Mossey's hardest crashes and toughest injuries a few years ago, and the Tactix by Lloyd & Jones BMW team has not yet been able to make too much of a habit out of being at the front of BSB races. Nonetheless, it was a strong start, at least in terms of speed, for Mossey. 0.095 seconds behind O'Halloran.

Ryan Vickers' season has gone from strength to strength, and that momentum does not seem to be letting up in Thruxton. He finished third in FP1, albeit almost 0.3 seconds behind O'Halloran.

Danny Kent was fourth on the Lovell Kent Honda, the leading Fireblade as is becoming somewhat the norm for the #52. While Kent made it three manufacturers in the top four, Leon Haslam confirmed a second BMW in the top five positions with an identical time to Kent: 1:16.647.

Tommy Bridewell was just over half-a-tenth shy of Haslam, and the top Ducati in sixth. The speed of Thruxton and the reliance on rear traction means it should suit the Ducati on paper, but the Panigale V4 R has only won there on one occasion - 2019 Race 2 with Josh Brookes.

In contrast to that day, Brookes found himself down in 20th in 2023's FP1 session, over 1.5 seconds adrift of O'Halloran. His FHO Racing teammate, Peter Hickman, fared slightly better, 1.1 seconds off the pace in 12th.

The top 10 was covered by less than one second in BSB FP1, with the rear being brought up by the FS-3 Kawasaki duo of Lee Jackson (9th) and Max Cook (10th), while Jack Kennedy (7th) and Kyle Ryde (8th) made it four Yamahas in the top 10.
