Raul Fernandez suffered similar injuries to reigning MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin in Sepang, as he fractured his left hand and foot during a huge crash, however, the Spaniard is already on the mend and will try to ride during this week’s Thailand test, which starts on Wednesday.
While Martin has been ruled out and remains a doubt for the season-opener at the end of the month, Fernandez is already raring to go despite undergoing surgery to repair both fractures just a few days ago.
Following his big crash, which was one of three big accidents on day-one in Sepang as Fabio Di Giannantonio also went on to suffer injuries that would require surgery, Fernandez flew back to Barcelona straight away in order to have the surgery as quickly as possible.
It’s for that reason that the Aprilia rider believes he’s able to take part in the final MotoGP pre-season test.

Speaking in Buriram ahead of the two-day test, Fernandez said: “I’m lucky to be here. After the crash, I came back immediately to Spain. I really appreciate what Dr Xavier Mir did because I landed in Barcelona and he had everything ready for surgery. And for that reason, I am here today. He helped me a lot.
“The crash was just one week ago, so [everything had to be done] fast. I had to travel to Europe, have surgery and come back. It was not easy, but we are here.”
With Martin ruled out, Fernandez being in action will no doubt aid Aprilia’s preparation as the Italian company is already playing catch up to the likes of Ducati, although it’s hard to imagine the former KTM rider will be 100 per cent.
Fernandez is the only rider out of the three that were injured in Sepang that’s taking part in the Thai MotoGP test, but VR46 expects Di Giannantonio to be back in time for the first race.
