Warning issued amid sinister rise in horrific offence aimed at bikers
A professional SuperEnduro rider reveals sickening injuries after being caught up in an apparent 'wire trap' incident while riding
Bikers are being urged to be vigilant when out riding after a motorcyclist in the United States revealed he had been injured in an apparent ‘wire trap’ incident.
The rider, Taddy Blazusiak, took to Instagram to reveal the injuries he suffered when he made contact with the wire trap. While he suffered injuries to his face in the incident, he is aware the outcome could have been a lot worse.
Conceringly for the community, the publicising of this incident by Blazusiak - which occurred in the United States led to a slew of comments detailing similar experiences by other people, giving rise to a concern that the practice is sinisterly on the rise.
For those unsure, a wire trap sees a perpetrator pull a wire or tether between two objects with the express intention to garrotte and/or cause harm to a person who comes along and strikes it.
The technique is particularly dangerous for bikers since the wire is often unseen and unexpected, while the speed of impact can have the effect of striking the neck or limbs for a particularly gruesome or even fatal outcome.
In this instance, Blazusiak - a professional rider and SuperEnduro champion according to RideApart - said he got away with lacerations after it snagged on his chin piece and shoulder rather than a more exposed part of his body.
For those not of a squeamish nature (and full disclaimer, viewing it requires some parental guidance-style caution) the wound to his face on his Instagram channel showing him before surgery can be viewed HERE, along with his full post.
Writing on Instagram, he said: “I’m writing this to let the entire off-road community know that there are people out there that are unstable (sic) enough to intentionally hurt others just because they hate motorcycles.
"So here’s what happened to me, (I’m) riding a trail on the way to my riding spot on Monday 11.11, I caught a wire that someone intentionally hung across the trail.
“Thankfully somehow I caught it in an angle coming out of a corner so I took it on my right shoulder and between my helmet chin piece and goggles, if that wire would slip down from the chin piece onto my neck most probably I wouldn’t be writing this post."
He goes on to assure: "All good here I got stitched up by a plastic surgeon so I hope my face muscles and the scar are going to be OK. I just can't stop thinking, what if I caught it straight on my neck…”
Naturally, if we were to consider every possible freak eventuality that could affect us while simply riding or competing, then the motorcycle industry would wither and die pretty fast, but it remains a pertinent reminder that such hideous events can and do take place.
For now there is no word on whether the criminals in this act have been sought but comments appear to suggest many unsolved previous cases, unfortunately.
If you weren't hyper vigilant when out riding already or don’t suit up with protective gear properly, then this is a prime example of why it is so very important to do so…
