1984 Ducati 900SS Brought to Life With Custom Carbon Rebuild
A 1984 Ducati 900SS is given the custom rebuild of its life and damn does it look good
At first sight this might look like an original Ducati 900SS, but there is a caveat to this stunning rebuild and it’s because the bike is thought to be Darmah SD900, according to the guys at Purpose Built Moto who rebuilt it into a custom carbon Ducati 900SS. But does that take away from the beauty and style of this machine? Absolutely not.
Custom built motorcycles have been around for generations and they show no sign of slowing down, nor do we want them to. And this build is not one you want to miss. A bike that is quite literally a frame, engine and wheels to do that important thing which is drive forward, it describes simplicity to the tee.
Covered in carbon fibre, this revamped cafe racer has been spruced into life in many ways, the first of which is with the engine. The bike’s 900cc engine is rebuilt while also being paired with Mikuni carburetors while the exhaust on this machine has undergone a custom job which resulted in a two-into-two configuration that runs perfectly alongside each cylinder head at the side of the bike.
To finish off the build PBM installed a custom carbon fender that was originally designed for a Harley-Davidson with a front wheel larger than what would fit the 900SS. But after some impressive tweaks the 19-inch front wheel was a super fit for the 900SS’s 18-inch front wheel.
But what is a rebuild without a dyno test at the end of it to see how many ponies it can fire out? Well, PBM took the rebuilt Ducati and tested it at the Cube Performance Centre in Australia, home of Ducati’s Superbike team down under. 65.1bhp - not bad at all, while making 54.7 Nm (40.4lb ft) of torque.
