Barcelona Officially Revealed as 2024 MotoGP Finale
It’s official, either Jorge Martin or Francesco Bagnaia will be crowned MotoGP champion in Barcelona
Dorna has officially confirmed Barcelona as the venue which will decide who is the 2024 MotoGP world champion.
The finale, set to take place on 15-17 November, is traditionally held in Valencia at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, however, that is no longer the case following the devastating floods which have seen over 200 people lose their lives at the time of this writing.
Initially, MotoGP officials and the FIM president Jorge Vargas wanted to run the event as normal in Valencia despite the disturbing scenes and the road to the circuit being heavily damaged. Other regions of Spain have been hit hard by the ongoing floods, including Barcelona which was flooded just three days ago.
Not wanting to pull resources from lifesaving activities to help repair the damage MotoGP bosses cancelled the Valencia Grand Prix and have now confirmed they are shifting the race to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Had the finale not gone ahead altogether, then MotoGP fans would have missed out on a potential epic final round. The title, which has been won the last two seasons by Francesco Bagnaia is still in the balance although Martin has one hand on the trophy as he leads his fellow Ducati rider by 24 points with just 37 available.
A statement from Dorna read: “MotoGP made the request to the authorities to race in Barcelona as it was the best possible choice. The track is the easiest option for fans who were already planning to attend the MotoGP season finale. The location and circuit are also the most efficient choice, providing a close to seamless alternative for personnel and logistics.
“The event will be organised by MotoGP™ and we remain committed to our mission to have a positive impact on people, place and planet wherever we race. In this case, racing near the Community of Valencia will also allow the paddock to put that into action even more directly.”
The finale in Barcelona will be Martin’s final race for Ducati before he more-than-likely takes the number one plate to Aprilia, while it will also be the final round for Marc Marquez at Gresini before he jumps ship to the Factory Lenovo Ducati team. The news also means Aleix Espargaro will get the chance to finish his MotoGP career at his home track before undertaking the role of test rider for Honda.
