Jorge Martin made his first appearance of the 2025 season during Sunday’s Qatar MotoGP round, but it ended in another hospital visit for the Spaniard as he suffered a collapsed lung and multiple fractures following a bad crash.

Martin made his MotoGP comeback and official racing debut with Aprilia at the Lusail International Circuit after having missed the first three rounds of 2025 due to injury, but a crash in the race resulted in maybe his biggest injury of the year to date.

Martin suffered multiple fractures in a crash during day one of pre-season testing in February at Sepang, before the reigning world champion was hit with a second setback ahead of the Thai GP when he crashed in a training accident and sustained more fractures.

Passed fit on Thursday prior to the event getting underway, Martin was struggling in the race before suffering a crash at turn 12 with nine laps remaining. The factory Aprilia rider was then struck by Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio coming into the second of two right-hand corners with the Spanish star requiring immediate assistance before being taken to the circuit’s medical centre.

Martin was transferred to a hospital in Doha, where he was diagnosed with a collapsed lung and multiple rib fractures.

Aprilia has since released an update on Martin’s condition, saying: “Jorge Martin spent the night at the Hamad General Hospital. There are no traumatic alterations affecting the brain, cervical spine or abdominal organs.

“An update regarding the rib fractures: eight fractures affect the posterior costal arches from the first to the eighth and there are three fractures observed in the lateral arches from the seventh to the ninth.

“Minimal pleural swelling is also noted in the context of the known pneumothorax. Jorge will remain under observation for a few days in Hamad International Hospital until the pneumothorax resolves.

“We will update you as soon as we have relevant news.”
