The Swedish suspension giant Ohlins has been bought in its eternity by the Italian Braking behemoth Brembo, in a deal that is reported to be worth $405 million.

The braking manufacturer has acquired the suspension company from Apollo Global Management-backed Tenneco, and it is being paid for by “available cash”, according to a statement from Brembo.

The money to buy the Swedish firm was, according to Reuters, raised from the sale of its 5.6 per cent stake in Pirelli, simultaneously putting to bed the rumour that the tyre maker and brake manufacturer were set to merge.

The acquisition of Ohlins means not only the ownership of the road-going suspension division, but also of Ohlins Racing, which gives Brembo a huge reach in the world of two and four-wheeled motorsports. MotoGP and WorldSBK aside, the Racing arm of Ohlins also has a presence in Formula 1, Nascar, and numerous off-road and bicycle racing world championship classes.

Speaking about the news, Tom Wittenschlaeger, CEO of Öhlins Racing, said:

“As we join forces with Brembo, we are excited to unlock new growth opportunities and leverage our respective strengths and assets to drive innovation and deliver even greater value to our customers and employees,”

The news means Ohlins becomes another big-name notch on the Brembo totem pole, as it joins Bybre, Breco, Marchesini, AP Racing, J.Juan, and SBS Friction under the brand’s umbrella.

“Öhlins is a strong fit for Brembo. It is a world-renowned brand, with a solid business and an unrivalled reputation, both on the racetrack and the road,” said Matteo Tiraboschi, Brembo Executive Chairman. “We welcome Öhlins to our Group as a great opportunity to expand our offerings for the automotive market. With this addition, we take another step forward in our strategy to provide integrated intelligent solutions to our customers, leveraging synergies across key technologies in the vehicle’s corner.”
