Brembo Teams Up with Michelin, Months After Partnering with Ohlins
Brembo’s bid to seemingly take over the world continues as it enters into a partnership with Michelin to reduce stopping distances
Brembo’s big 2024, which has already seen them join forces with Ohlins, is ending with another massive bang thanks to its new agreement with French tyre manufacturer Michelin, which will see a global partnership based on reduced braking distance technology being implemented, a system that’s already been tested.
Brembo’s abilities when it comes to braking performance are second-to-none, just ask all manufacturers that seem to use it on the best bikes, while it's also a consistent presence in MotoGP and World Superbike.
Brembo will combine such knowledge and skill in its braking systems and artificial intelligence with Michelin's tyre modelling and algorithm development expertise to create a new system.
The new technology advancement will rely on the continuous exchange of real-time data between Michelin's connected solutions software, which generates tyre grip data to Brembo's SENSIFY braking system.
Testing has already started with results said to be encouraging, and the benefits of this new system will allow engineers to make the reduced braking distance system more efficient, which in-turn could make the difference to a rider crashing and not.
The braking tests carried out took place on testing tracks at the Michelin R&D centre in France using two identical machines. One of those was equipped with the Brembo SENSIFY system and Michelin Solutions, while the other was running a standard ABS system.
Michelin's trusted Pilot Sport and Pilot Alpin tyres were the guineapigs for these tests at speeds ranging between 32-80 mph, and the results were said to be impressive.
A statement from Brembo CEO Daniele Schillaci said: “At Brembo, we believe in the power of technology and artificial intelligence. In fact, we are increasingly becoming a company combining software capabilities with our expertise in the corner of the vehicle, mastering calipers, discs, and friction materials with unique know-how. SENSIFY represents the new standard in braking that will target a zero accidents vision.
“This partnership with Michelin illustrates the power of collaboration and innovation in the automotive industry.”
