However, it was Hailwood’s comeback to motorcycle racing in 1978 after an 11-year hiatus that assured his legacy as one of the sport’s greatest, so much so that it will form the basis of a blockbuster film very soon.

Few expected Hailwood to be competitive after such a long period out, but he went on to claim victory on a Ducati 900SS supplied by a Manchester dealership in front of record crowds.
