The track-only Triumph TF 250-X motocross bike is the subject of a worldwide recall, due to a possible fault with the bike’s ignition switch.

The issue relates to the righthand switchcube, which can become cracked under certain circumstances, allowing water and dirt ingress which could cause the switch to malfunction, starting the engine without warning.

To help prevent the risk of the bike starting and causing injury, Triumph is advising that owners stop using their TF 250-Xs immediately and disconnect the battery of the bike. They can then contact their nearest Triumph dealership which will remedy the problem with the free-of-charge replacement of the righthand switchcube.

The fix to the switchcube to a more robust item isn't the only job that Triumph will carry out when the bike gets recalled, though, as Triumph's PR team has been in touch to let us know of a number of other upgrades that will also take place.

Recalled bikes will also receive a new clutch centre with increased oil flow to the clutch plates, and a new set of clutch plates. They'll also get a new engine/ECU tune, which Triumph claims will improve low-speed performance (particularly when cold). The bikes will also get further tweaks to the fuelling for stronger power delivery throughout the rev range. The final upgrade is a new fuel tank mounting washer, which is said to prevent incorrect reassembly when removing and refitting the fuel tank.

The full statement on the Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA), which only talks about the switchgear replacement, reads:

“The switchcube (which includes buttons for use by the operator to start and stop the engine) is not stable in specific conditions (exposure to brake fluid & when exposed to high pressure water), and potentially could self start. The unexpected start of the motorcycle can lead to accidents.”

Bikes affected by the issue were produced between July 20, 2023, and August 08, 2024. The bike has also been recalled by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, which advises that bikes with a VIN between BP6028 and CC7868 should also take action.
