WSBK switch to EVO rules in 2015
Rule change aims to save series by cutting team costs
THE FIM has confirmed the World Superbike Championship will change to the new EVO technical regulations in 2015.
The aim of the new EVO rules is to reduce costs and ensure fairness for potential new teams and prevent the decline of the series. British Superbikes successfully made a similar change in 2010.
The finalised regulations are to be confirmed but will involve limits on engine tuning and electronics and price caps on components.
Although there will only be a sub-category for the EVO rules in WSBK 2014, all of the WSBK field will have to abide by them in the 2015 season.
The FIM has released a statement saying: ‘All Superbikes will have to comply with the EVO technical regulations, in order to maintain the ongoing cost reduction process. The Superbike Commission is studying some modifications to those technical rules that will be announced by the end of 2013.
‘The new changes should allow all Manufacturers entering the Championship to be competitive, as well as providing an easier route into the World Championship for National Championship Riders and Teams, either as a wildcard or as a permanent entry.’
A winter and overseas testing ban for contracted teams and riders will run from December 1 to January 15, with Dorna organising official testing at Phillip Island.
Practice restrictions now also include a ban of in-season private testing between the first and last race except for three official tests.
