New Isle of Man 20mph speed zones to cost £400k
A total of £400,000 could be spent to implement new 20mph speed zones across the island

The Isle of Man is set to be taken over by 20mph speed zones, which could cost a total of £400,000, with the project set to introduce the new speed zones in residential streets around some parts of the island used for road racing.
The work to introduce these new speed limits has already begun, with Port St Mary becoming the first village in the island to receive a blanket 20mph zone in February.
Infrastructure Minister Dr Michelle Haywood told the House of Keys that a plan to complete the roll-out of the 20mph zones was intended by the end of 2026.
Additionally, the DoI Minister said Douglas and Onchan would serve as a contiguous residential area and that a 20mph speed limit is planned to be introduced during the summer of 2025.
Following that, northern towns and villages such as Ramsay and Kirk Michael, both famous sections of the TT course, would receive the same treatment later in 2025 before moving on to locations along the central belt, including Laxey and Peel, which are most likely to see the speed zones arrive in 2026.
Haywood said: “Overall spend on the Port St Mary, Douglas and Onchan schemes comprises around £40,000 on school signs, £22,000 on general signs, and £80,000 on installation and removal of some existing signage.
“The projected cost of implementing the remainder of the scheme across the island is estimated at around £250,000, if the scheme that is currently being proposed is accepted and not changed.
“This comprises around £18,000 on school signs, £20,000 on general signs, around £200,000 on installation.
“These figures may change a little as we incorporate the feedback that we’ve received from residents, both in proposed zoned and in non-zoned areas, and we define the signage plan for each location.”
