A Birmingham man was convicted of murder this week, after he rammed an e-bike rider into a concrete bollard in August 2023.

The driver of the car, Abdirahman Ibrahim, 22, pursued Liam Jones and his friend as the pair rode e-bikes around Birmingham city centre. Ibrahim apparently followed the pair as he was angered by the “showboating” displayed by Liam Jones, who was pulling stand-up wheelies on the public road.

The court heard that Ibrahim first encountered the riders on Coventry Road, turning his car around to follow the pair as they were initially heading in the opposite direction. Now aware of the following car, Liam and his friend initially tried to shake off the white Seat Leon, even riding the wrong way up a one-way street. Ibrahim eventually caught up with them on Moat Lane, next to Gilberstone Park, and while one of the e-bike riders managed to give him the slip, Liam could not.

After ramming the bike the first time, Ibrahim sped up for a second attack, colliding with the rear of Jones’ bike, forcing him from the machine and causing him to collide with a concrete bollard. After the attack, Ibrahim drove over the e-bike before making a U-turn and fleeing the scene.

Ibrahim and his brother, Abdullahi Ibrahim (the passenger in the Seat), then left the car, with them travelling back to their homes via separate taxis. When questioned shortly after the attack about their movements, Abdirahman initially lied to police about his and the whereabouts of the car, claiming it was parked somewhere else at 9:30pm the previous night.

Abdirahman Ibrahim had already pled guilty to manslaughter, although this charge was raised to murder after the West Midlands Police pushed for murder due to the intent shown by the driver. Abdullahi Ibrahim, aged 21, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender at an earlier hearing and will be sentenced alongside his brother on 26 March.

Speaking about the hearing, Detective Inspector Nick Barnes, from our homicide unit, said:

“Abdirahman Ibrahim was intent on causing harm to Liam. He could have turned off at any point but he followed the riders and wanted to be in control.

“This was not a case of racing gone wrong as had been claimed by Ibrahim, but of him menacingly pursuing Liam and his friend.

“We believe he was angered by Liam’s showboating and wanted to teach him a lesson. He knew what he had done and did nothing to help, instead driving off.

“Tragically, Liam lost his life, and Ibrahim will now spend many years of his own young life in prison. Ibrahim’s brother may have felt a sense of loyalty, but by trying to help his sibling, he is now also a convicted criminal.

“We know Liam’s death caused a lot of concern within the community, and our detectives have worked tirelessly - reviewing hours upon hours of CCTV footage and phone records - to ensure we achieved these convictions.

“While nothing will ever bring Liam back, we hope knowing those involved have been caught and are being punished will provide some solace to his family and friends.”
