Video footage showing a police officer, quite literally, taking down two teens who were riding a stolen scooter has been released by West Midlands police.

The incident took place in Birmingham city centre last week, with CCTV and tip-offs from the public both helping to allow the two officer team to zero-in on the stolen bike. The footage shows the two officers tracking the pair, eventually parking it in the road to partially block the road ahead. As the scooter approaches, the two officers jump from the vehicle, ordering the scooter-mounted pair to stop, although when they don’t, one of the officers bravely puts their body on the line.

At the last second, as the scooter looks to be slipping past the officers, one of them leaps out from the car and sprints toward the scooter, still ordering them to stop. The resulting collision sees the officer and the two riders falling to the ground, although the police officer is quick to get back on their feet so they can make the arrest. As a result of the collision is reported to have left the officer with bruises but no other more serious injuries.

The white scooter (which seems to be all electric) had been stolen from Solihull around two hours earlier. The pair, aged 17 and 16, remain in custody today on suspicion of attempted wounding of an officer and theft of the motorbike.

Insp Dan Thomas, whose city centre officers made the arrests, said:

“This was absolutely fantastic collaborative work across our CCTV, Force Contact and city centre policing teams.

“I am really grateful to everyone involved, especially my two officers who intercepted the pair putting themselves in harm’s way, I am thankful that they were not more seriously injured.”
