ONE of the most well-known and best-loved roads in Wales has been slapped with a 40mph speed limit. The move is despite widespread disapproval for the move, from locals and people across the UK alike.

Llangollen County councillor Graham Timms is one of the men behind the move, and he claims that he and his colleagues are 'delighted' at the move.

Pointing to road safety as the primary reason for the change, Mr Timms confirmed the change had been in the works since 2017, although widespread appeals against the speed limit had slowed its implementation.

"County councillor Melvyn Mile and I were delighted to receive notification that the proposal for a 40mph speed limit on the Horseshoe Pass has now been approved.” He said. “We discussed the speed limit with road safety officers, along with Cllr Martyn Holland of Llandegla Ward, back in 2017. Our support for the speed limit has been unanimous."

"Whilst the vast majority of drivers 'follow the rules', we now need to ensure that the North Wales Police support the county in enforcing the speed limit when it starts, hopefully, later this year."

When the speed limit on the pass was first discussed, Cllr Timms commented, “We can’t just sit back any longer whilst road users continue to get injured or killed. Something has to be done to make the area much safer for everyone.

“Over the last two months, the air ambulance has visited the pass on two occasions to support seriously injured casualties in accidents on the bends on each side of the summit.”

Horseshoe Pass has been a favourite with motorcycle fans pretty much since the dawn of the motorcycle. Its stunning views, sweeping bends, and legendary Ponderosa Café make it one of the many must-ride roads Wales has to offer.
