Kawasaki recalls KLX230 dual sports for incorrect front brakes
Kawasaki has been forced to recall a number of its dual sport bikes after they were found to have faults with the front brakes.
Kawasaki USA has recalled a number of its dual sport KLX230 bikes after they were found to have deficiencies with the front brake disc.
The recall refers to the Kawasaki KLX230 ABS and KLX230 S ABS produced between 2020 and 2022, and has been triggered by the discovery of incorrect brake rotors installed on some models. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the incorrect rotors “can reduce brake performance. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 122, "Motorcycle Brake Systems."”
Of course, reduced brake performance reduces, in turn, the safety of the vehicle, and therefore makes the vehicle a hazard to both its own pilot, as well as to other road users.
The total number of bikes that could have been affected is 1,923, according to the NHTSA, and Kawasaki USA is aiming to have the repair information to its dealers by the end of June. Upon reception of the repair information, the dealers will replace the incorrect brake rotors, and pads, free of charge.
Kawasaki USA says, “ Owners of eligible units will be notified to contact an authorised Kawasaki motorcycle dealership to schedule an appointment to complete the repairs.”
In addition to the recall, Kawasaki has released a stop sale notice in relation to the affected KLX230s, and says it is “working toward a resolution of this matter as quickly as possible.”
The Non-Compliance Notice was served on 6 June 2022, and Kawasaki’s stop sale notice was issued the same day.
