Lifeline for Brandon Stadium as Council Protects Land

The now derelict Brandon Stadium has been thrown a lifeline this year, after Rugby Council makes plans to restore the venue

The now-derilict Brandon Stadium, the former home of the Coventry Bees, may not have seen competitive action since 2016, although its future as a motorsport venue could be looking up, after Rugby Council makes plans.

The expansive site, which is just a few miles from Coventry city centre, was thought to have been heading to the developers since it closed its doors. Rugby Council has other ideas, though, and as part of its Local Plan, the site could be restored back to its former glory.

The council has confirmed that talks are taking place to work towards full restoration of the site and also reviving the plot as a functioning motorsport venue. As well as speedway racing, Brandon Stadium formerly hosted stockcars, banger racing, greyhound racing and stunt shows and music events. However it, is speedway that it’s most famous for, with it hosting the Speedway World Finals on a number of occasions.

The BBC reports that planning permission at the former site of the Coventry Bees racing team would not be granted for any schemes that conflict with that, something Wayne Roberts, from the site's former racing team said provided him with "renewed hope".

"We've had so many false dawns, so to have the council supporting bringing the stadium back and keeping, it's what people need … There's so many stock car people that desperately want Brandon back so they can do racing - we need the stadium so we can have some entertainment." He concluded.

The site has previously been earmarked for more than 100 homes to be built on, although plans to demolish the historic stadium were rejected and the stadium, which has operated for nearly 100-years, still stands today.
