MotoGP Champion Jorge Martin Undergoes Successful Surgery
Jorge Martin has undergone successful surgery following his massive highside at the Sepang MotoGP test
Jorge Martin has undergone successful surgery on his right hand after suffering a massive high-side on the opening day of last week’s official Sepang MotoGP test.
The reigning world champion, who was making his first appearance of the year for Aprilia, had already crashed once before the fall that ultimately left the ex-Ducati rider with a fractured right hand and left foot.
Martin suffered a closed fracture of the fifth metacarpal in his right hand and a closed fracture of the third, fourth and fifth metatarsals of the left foot. Ouch! Following his crash, Martin was immediately taken to the medical centre at the track in Sepang before returning to Europe for surgery.
After taking the #1 plate away from Ducati to Aprilia, Martin is expected to lead the Noale-based manufacturer’s charge in 2025 although he is now a doubt for the season opener in Thailand, which begins on 28 February. Martin has already been ruled out of the upcoming two-day test at Buriram this week.
If Martin cannot take part, expect Aprilia’s long-time test rider Lorenzo Savadori to replace the Spaniard. While Martin’s recovery is now the most pressing concern for Aprilia, the Italian company’s disagreement with Michelin regarding the cause of the crash remains.
Aprilia claimed Martin’s fall was neither a rider error or a fault with the RS-GP25, however, Michelin’s Motorsport manager when it comes to two-wheel racing, Piero Taramasso, claimed Martin began his last run with a tyre operating 15 degrees less than normal.
That has since riled Aprilia Racing CEO, Massimo Rivola, into saying this: “Regarding the crash, I would like to make it clear that our data in no way confirm the statements made by Piero Taramasso.
“I believe that the riders' safety should be the priority, and I have already suggested that he set a meeting with all the teams in order to deal constructively with what is clearly a critical situation, as evidenced by the number of injuries.”
