Some surprises took place at the Sepang MotoGP test, although a familiar brand ended up on top

Ducati were on top form once again in Sepang as the Italian brand topped two of the three days of testing ahead of the MotoGP season opener later this month, but other manufacturers showed promise.

Day one was about Yamaha’s continued steps forward as Fabio Quartararo ended the day fastest ahead of Lenovo Ducati rider Marc Marquez. Fast forward to day two and the Frenchman was again in contention as he settled for second behind VR46’s Franco Morbidelli.

And while Quartararo was third on day three, Ducati began to ramp things up as Alex Marquez bolted himself to the top of the leaderboard, narrowly edging out Francesco Bagnaia who had been quiet on the previous two days.

Behind Quartararo in fourth was day two pacesetter Morbidelli, with Marc Marquez a solid fifth. It’s been clear for all to see that Ducati, whether it be last year’s title-winning bike or the new Desmosedici GP25, has the potential to go on and dominate in 2025, just like it did last season.

Alex Marquez’s time was just over a tenth shy of the official lap record set by Bagnaia, with the latter missing out on top spot by a very slender +0.007s. The gaps gradually got bigger from there on as Quartararo was two tenths down on the fastest time, while Marc Marquez in fifth was over half a second away from his brother’s fastest lap.

But while Ducati made a statement, Yamaha - mainly thanks to Quartararo - made another to make us think that a solid challenge will be presented by the Iwata-based brand in 2025, as could be the case with KTM despite its ongoing struggles financially.

Putting those to one side, Pedro Acosta was the fastest KTM rider, something we expect to see a lot of in 2025 as he claimed sixth on the final day.

Then there was another impressive showing from more than one Honda rider as Johann Zarco narrowly got the better of Joan Mir, with the pair finishing seventh and eighth respectively. Like Yamaha, 2025 is a massive year for Honda who have been in the MotoGP dumps for an extended period of time.

But signs in testing have been promising for Honda although the big challenge will be to continue that when racing gets underway and the likes of Aprilia show their best form.
