Sepang MotoGP Test Results: Fabio Quartararo sweeps all three days
Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo completes his domiation of the first pre-season MotoGP test in Sepang with the quickest lap on for a third successive day
Fabio Quartararo underlined his status as a potential title 2020 MotoGP title contender with a convincing run to the fastest time on all three days of the pre-season test in Malaysia.
Scene of one of six pole positions he achieved in his rookie season last year, Quartararo’s top time on the final day – a 1m 58.349s – was the quickest of all and achieved on the 2020-spec Yamaha M1 he will ride for satellite effort Petronas SRT this year.
Less than a tenth shy of the lap time that gave him pole position in October, it nonetheless demonstrated that Quartararo will continue to be a major threat in 2020 as he seeks his first victories ahead of a move to the Yamaha Factory in 2021.
Though it was the same name atop the timesheets all weekend, the test was nonetheless notable for how close the times were and how varied the competition was with all six manufacturers again inside the top ten on the last day of action. Moreover, just one second split first down to 18th position.
Cal Crutchlow turned in the second quickest as the best representative for Honda with the injured Marc Marquez down in 12th position, while Alex Rins and Pecco Bagnaia ended the test third and fourth.
A big gain on the final day saw Valentino Rossi rise into the top five, ahead of leading Ducati rider Danilo Petrucci, top KTM man Pol Espargaro and the consistently quick Jack Miller. Aleix Espargaro and Joan Mir rounded out the top ten.
Meanwhile, Jorge Lorenzo made his first official test outing with Yamaha, turning in the 20th fastest lap time but going considerably quicker than he managed during the Malaysian MotoGP qualifying session when he was a Repsol Honda rider.
